Future of our Forests.

Through the 2018-19 budget, the Government has committed $35.9 million over four years to deliver greater community value from our forests.
This includes $17.6 million allocated to the modernisation of Victoria’s RFAs and forest management system, which will improve the long-term management of Victoria’s forests and ensure the RFAs reflect modern science and consider community needs.
The RFA modernisation program will include:
  • Comprehensive engagement with Victorian communities about what they value in forests
  • Redesign of what forest values information we collect and the way we collect that information
  • Development of a vision for the future management of our forests
  • Renewal of Victoria’s five RFAs
  • Reform of environmental regulation of timber harvesting operations, and
  • Refreshing forest management planning, including greater integration with fire planning.
The remaining $18.3 million has been committed to undertake pre-harvest surveys in timber harvesting coupes. This will provide greater operational certainty for the timber industry and improve the management and protection of threatened species. For more info - Forest Protection Survey Program

New Year to Bring a New CEO for Yarra Ranges - Yarra Ranges Council Published on 19 December 2018

Yarra Ranges Council will welcome a new Chief Executive Officer to its helm early in the new year following Council’s resolution to appoint Tammi Rose to the position at last night’s Council meeting. Councillors voted unanimously on Ms Rose’s appointment, which will see her fill the role for a four year term, beginning Monday, 4 February 2019.
Yarra Ranges Mayor Tony Stevenson said Ms Rose brought a wealth of experience in a range of senior roles, in both inner metropolitan and rural councils. She is currently Director Corporate Services at Hobsons Bay Council, where she also took on an Acting CEO role earlier this year.
“With more than 18 years of local government experience in leading teams and driving innovation, Tammi is well qualified to ensure our organisation continues to service our diverse communities, sustain our natural environment and support growth in local jobs,” Cr Stevenson said.
“With a Masters in Organisational Development and professional qualifications as an Accountant (CPA), Tammi is well placed to continue and build on the current direction of our organisation.
“Council is excited by the energy, ideas and experience Tammi brings to Yarra Ranges, and we look forward to welcoming her in the new year.”
Ms Rose said she was excited by the challenge of leading the organisation as it continues its drive to be more efficient and innovative in delivering services to local communities.
“I am looking forward to joining the team at Yarra Ranges and being immersed in the region’s diverse industry and tourism, stunning natural environments, rural living and the vibrant lifestyle that is the envy of Victoria,” she said.
“Yarra Ranges has an exciting future ahead, and it will be a privilege to work with the community, councillors and the organisation to move the municipality to another level of liveability, ensuring it is agile and future proofed to support the communities of tomorrow as well as today.”
Ms Rose’s appointment followed an extensive recruitment process conducted by external firm McArthur.
Cr Stevenson said Council was presented with a challenging choice among many capable and experienced applicants who were competing to lead Yarra Ranges into the future.
He paid tribute to the interim leadership team who continued leading the organisation following the resignation of former CEO Glenn Patterson, who now leads the City of Casey.
“We are fortunate to have a strong, talented senior leadership team at Yarra Ranges who have kept the organisation running smoothly as we sought our next CEO,” Cr Stevenson said.
“In particular, councillors wish to recognise Troy Edwards and Mark Varmalis for their effective leadership and commitment during their time as Acting CEO.”
Tammi Rose will commence in the CEO role at Yarra Ranges on 4 February, 2019.

Safety concerns for kids after pedestrian bridge is removed.

Safety concerns for kids after pedestrian bridge is removed. - Mail News Group.
The ageing bridge was deemed unsafe and removed by VicRoads, and has left only one path for kids to take to get to the bus stop. That path is walking along a blind corner in an 80km/h zone.
"Mayor Tony Stevenson summed up the sentiments of the room, with all councilors voting to take urgent action.
“Even the person who took those photos was putting their lives in danger … I’d be surprised if any of us here thinks this is acceptable,” he said."

McMahons Creek community is at risk

At last night's Yarra Ranges Council meeting, Council resolved unanimously to request the State Government to intervene NOW and take urgent action to fund the reinstatement of the VicRoads McMahons Creek pedestrian bridge.
Thank you so much to Bodie Sellar of McMahons Crk for representing the Reefton/McMahons Creek Community and Reefton McMahons Action Group (RMAG), Bodie so admirably and passionately presented to Council.
"MOTION - Cr Child
That Council
1. Consider that community safety is significantly at risk in McMahons Creek as a result of the demolition of the former McMahons Creek pedestrian bridge adjacent to Warburton Woods Point Road.
2. Seek urgent action to have the former McMahons Creek pedestrian bridge at McMahons Creek reinstated by VicRoads by writing to
(a) The Regional Director of VicRoads,
(b) Cindy McLeish MLA state Member for Eildon,
(c) The Hon Jaala Pulford MLC - Minister for Roads, Minister for Road Safety and the TAC, Minister for Fishing and Boating."
The ageing McMahons Creek pedestrian bridge on Woods Point Road, Reefton was deemed unsafe, closed and removed by VicRoads in July 2017. Since that time, Council has received ongoing concerns from residents about the lack of pedestrian facilities and safety issues that have resulted for both school children and the general community following the bridge removal.
School children are currently being dropped off at a bus stop adjacent to three blind corners in an 80km/hr speed zone. Council’s traffic engineering staff consider that the current conditions are unsafe for pedestrians due to limited driver visibility with the road alignment and have written to VicRoads on behalf of the community advocating for the reinstatement of the pedestrian bridge, however VicRoads have not to date prioritised the project for funding advising that the proposal has been referred to their 2019/20 budget for consideration.
It is considered that safety of the local community is at risk and that urgent action is needed to have the McMahons Creek pedestrian bridge reinstated by VicRoads.Jaala Pulford MP Cindy McLeish MP Dan Andrews James MerlinoLilydale & Yarra Valley Leader Mail News Group Reefton/McMahons Creek Community

Forestry - Agriculture Victoria

Forestry is an important part of the social and economic fabric of Victoria, providing jobs, income and products derived from a natural, sustainable and renewable resource. We work with commercial forest industries to maximise economic value from production and processing of timber (plantations and native forests on public and private land) in a socially and environmentally sustainable manner, and assist industry to adapt to environmental, social and economic change.
