Farming Solutions for a Changing Climate

It was indeed my pleasure to open the Farming Solutions for a Changing Climate Event tonight at The Memo, Healesville.
• Farmers are on the front line of climate change. We are already experiencing a hotter climate with decreased rainfall and more volatile weather, and our agriculture community will need to continue to find ways to adapt to these risks if the agricultural sector is to continue to survive.
• Farmers and landholders can also have a role to play in helping to mitigate climate change, and we will hear more about this tonight.
• I am also very proud of the leadership Council is playing when it comes to climate change. Yarra Ranges Council has retrofitted 29 buildings with solar panels, implemented low energy lighting in 15 buildings and we have recently introduced 2 all electric vehicles into our fleet.
• We also have 2 programs to assist farmers.
- Our “Ribbons of Green” program has provided almost 800,000 trees and other plants to landholders over the last 10 years and we continue to provide support to landholders with re-vegetation projects.
- Our Environmental Upgrade program is providing competitive finance through our partners the Sustainable Australia Fund to upgrade commercial buildings and farms to deliver environmental benefits.
Thank-you to Council’s Environmental Stewardship Team for putting together this event tonight and the many supporting organisations that have helped to promote the event.
With Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Cr Tony Stevenson & Cr Mike Clarke.

Yarra Ranges Council - Advanced Waste Processing Solutions

At the 28th May Council meeting  I moved that Council join a collaborative procurement model with other Councils from the south east metropolitan Council group, for advanced waste processing solutions, facilitated by Metropolitan Waste Resource Recovery Group (MWRRG), to address the long term management of the municipality’s waste stream.
Yarra Ranges Council collects and disposes of approximately 30,000 tonnes of household waste from landfill bins within the municipality annually through a regional landfill disposal contract with the Metropolitan Waste Resource Recovery Group. This material is currently sent to the Suez Landfill in Hallam, which is projected to reach capacity in less than 10 years on current trends, at which time it will need to close.
The last landfill in the east of Melbourne is due to close down within the next 10 years.
As Hallam is the last landfill in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, future disposal options need to be investigated and considered now, given the timeframe to develop and shift to a new waste management model and to ensure continuity of service provision.
If Yarra Ranges Council was to exclude itself from this Alternative Waste Process proposal, Council would need to find an alternative solution to our waste disposal. This would put Council at risk of either not having a suitable location for processing or disposal of our waste or would put Council and the community in a position of incurring higher costs to transport waste further distances to another landfill.

McKenzie King Adventure Playground

Improvement works have been undertaken within the McKenzie King Adventure Playground at Millgrove by Yarra Ranges Council Graffiti Crew. Mark and Stu (Graffiti Crew) spent just under 3 days at the playground where they cleaned all the play equipment, removed peeling or flaking paint, treated rust and re-painted the entire play space, the result is amazing. A big thank you goes out to Mark and Stu (Yarra Ranges Council Graffiti Crew).

Warburton Film Festival returns for 36th year

The Warburton Film Festival is one of the biggest events in the Upper Yarra each year, drawing hundreds to the town over a weekend with its spectacular program. I’m proud that Council has been able to support the event through 2019 Grants for Community funding, giving the Film Society certainty that this fantastic weekend can go ahead. I encourage Yarra Ranges residents to come along to the festival
The Warburton Film Festival is returning to town for its 36th year with a packed program of international and local movies to be screened from 14-16 June.
The festival, held at the Arts Centre in Warburton, will feature an opening night event on Friday, 14 June and eight films made across the world, along with the Show Us Your Shorts film competition screening.
Yarra Ranges Film Society President and event organiser, Sally Ahern, said this year’s program featured films made in the UK, Australia, Mauritius, Lebanon, Japan and Palestine.
“In the 36th year of the festival, we are delighted to screen these films to both new film goers and those who have attended before – we extend a warm welcome to all,” Ms Ahern said.
“We’re again presenting the Show Us Your Shorts program and, during the Saturday afternoon entertainment, the winners of the four sections will be screened.
“The entries for this competition show a great variety of topics by the innovative film makers – it’s a session not to be missed.”

Protesters hijack Millgrove Small Business.

Work place sites MUST be protected from this illegal activist activity in future. ...... Why should a Millgove local business, Robin Logging & staff be held to ransom at a unrecoverable cost of between $100,000 - $200,000????
Minority protesters, please take your protest to Spring Street and the State Government and leave our hard working Upper Yarra local small businesses alone.
