Yarra Ranges Council has received ongoing concerns from residents about the lack of pedestrian facilities and safety issues on Warburton Highway, Seville East. Following a recent fatal collision, there is increased concern from Council and the community at this location.
Council’s Traffic & Transport team consider that the current conditions are unsafe for pedestrians and present issues for turning vehicles into the number of minor roads, service road and properties in this section. Council’s Traffic & Transport team have written to VicRoads in March 2019 on behalf of the community advocating for road safety improvements in this location, however no proposal has yet been developed or provided by VicRoads.
It is considered that safety of the local community is at risk and that urgent action is needed to provide road safety improvements that address pedestrian safety, turning vehicles and property access. Within this, a speed limit reduction is also considered appropriate.
At next Tuesday night's Council meeting Mayor Tony Stevenson will be raising this issue with a recommendation to Council:
'That Council
1. Considers that the safety of pedestrians and road users on Warburton Highway, Seville East between Douthie Road and Peters Road is a significant concern to Council and the community.
2. Seek urgent action to have intersection treatments, consolidation of access to properties from Warburton Highway, and a speed limit reduction installed to this area by writing to:
(a) The Regional Director of VicRoads,
(b) The State Member for Evelyn, and
(c) The Hon Jaala Pulford MLC - Minister for Roads, Minister for Road Safety and the TAC, Minister for Fishing and Boating.'
